TPR has published the results of its 2008 pension schemes governance survey which aimed to monitor standards and to highlight areas for specific attention. The results demonstrate that governance standards have remained reasonably constant over the past year. The survey does, however, reveal some significant gaps in the approach to governance standards adopted by schemes of different sizes.
The main areas where it appears trustees’ understanding could be improved in relation to large schemes include the clearance process and when an application should be made for clearance. Trustees of small schemes also highlighted investment of scheme assets, scheme rule provisions and the trustees’ role as areas where understanding could be improved.
