The South African Automotive Industry Code of Conduct, compiled in terms of the Consumer Protection Act, has been published in the Government Gazette as the prescribed
industry code for the automotive industry.
The code will regulate the relations between participants in the automotive industry and their interactions with consumers. It is an industry code and applies to the entire automotive
industry, including manufacturers, producers, wholesalers, dealers, retailers, service centres and importers.
The code relates to the conduct for the supply of goods and services by the automotive industry and consumers within the Republic of South Africa and focuses on consumer
protection, supplier guidance and fair business practices.
In terms of dispute resolution, the Motor Industry Ombudsman of South Africa is mandated to investigate any incidents of non-compliance by both consumers and suppliers brought
to its attention. It is tasked with implementing the code.
The code will come into force three months after its publication in the Gazette.
