The Department of Agriculture, through its Rural Development's Rural Utilities Program, recently approved a loan of up to $300 million for Basin Electric Power Cooperative. The loan will be used to fund a carbon capture research and demonstration project at Basin Electric’s conventional coal-fired power plant located near Beulah, North Dakota. The project would capture up to 1 million tons of CO2 per year. Most of the captured CO2 would then be sent via an existing CO2 pipeline to oil fields, while a small amount would be injected into a deep saline formation.
