An Interim Final Rule was issued (See 72 Fed. Reg. 72243 (Dec. 22, 2007)) to amend the Schedule of Fees for Consular Services and raise the fees charged for the processing of an application for a nonimmigrant visa (also known as a Machine Readable Visa, or MRV) and Border Crossing Card (BCC). The rule became effective January 1, 2008. Specifically, the fees for a MRV were raised from $100 to $131 and the fee for a BCC was increased by $20. The Department of State is adjusting the fees as an emergency measure to ensure that sufficient resources are available to meet the costs of processing nonimmigrant and immigrant visas in light of increased security measures.
