Yesterday, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced a number of changes to federal offshore energy leasing plans. The revised plan would preclude exploration and production leasing off the Atlantic seaboard until at least 2017, including a proposed lease sale off the coast of Virginia by 2012. It would also leave in place an existing moratorium on drilling in the eastern Gulf of Mexico that runs until 2022. In Alaska, there will be no new lease sales in the Chukchi Sea and Beaufort Sea until after 2012.
