In a letter sent on Oct. 16, Sen. Grassley (R-IA), Sen. Hatch (R-UT) and Rep. Smith (R-TX) asked HHS Secretary Sebelius to document roughly $23 million her department has allocated to research grants relating to "traditional" medical malpractice reforms aimed at curbing frivolous lawsuits. The group said a recent description of the research from the HHS Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), which awarded the research grants, "does not mention, much less emphasize, reforms to medical malpractice laws, as was clearly implied by the President's speech."
