The North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR ) has reportedly developed a proposal to study the potential environmental and economic impacts of various types of oil and gas exploration and extraction. According to news sources, the proposal includes an evaluation of current state regulations, which prohibit hydraulic fracturing.

The evaluation will be conducted by a panel of state and industry representatives as well as other interested parties. In addition to regulatory review, the agency plans to evaluate the potential oil and gas resources in the state, oil and gas exploration and extraction, and the potential environmental, infrastructure, economic, and social impacts of such efforts. A public meeting on the proposed scope of the evaluation has been scheduled for October 10, 2011, in Sanford, North Carolina.
