In part due to increased applications due to U.S. requirements for passports for Canadians, changes have been made to simplify passport applications for Canadians.

As of August 15, 2007, a simplified passport renewal program will be available for eligible Canadians residing in Canada. Less backup documentation will be required than before for renewals. As of October 1, 2007, a new passport guarantor policy will be introduced. Guarantors will no longer have to come from particular professions. Most adult Canadian passport holders will qualify as guarantors, including family members of the passport applicant.
