In compliance with the deadline set forth in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act ("ARRA"), the HIT Standards Committee developed a schedule for assessing the policy recommendations received from the HIT Policy Committee at its first meeting on May 15, 2009. ARRA also required the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services ("HHS") to publish this schedule in the Federal Register. HHS issued this schedule today, and it will appear in the Federal Register on May 26, 2009.
The Standards Committee established three workgroups during its first meeting. These workgroups will address the following subject areas: (i) clinical operations; (ii) clinical quality, and; (iii) privacy and security. The schedule issued today requires each workgroup to consider the relevant policy recommendations from the HIT Policy Committee and to assess the standards that are already in place and those that are needed to meet the priority area. The workgroup will also propose a timeline for the Standards Committee to issue recommendations, which address the priority area, to the National Coordinator. The HIT Standards Committee, as a whole, can then choose to accept or revise the proposed timeline and will assign the appropriate workgroup to conduct further research.
