The European Commission (EC) has announced a public consultation on methylene glycol, or hydrated formaldehyde, a substance often present in cosmetics, particularly hair-straightening products. According to EC, although restrictions on formaldehyde use in cosmetic products exist per Directive 76/768/EEC, Annex III, entry 13 (concerning formaldehyde in nail hardeners) and in Annex VI, entry 5 (concerning formaldehyde and paraformaldehyde used as preservatives), use of methylene glycol is not explicitly included, and the agency would like it banned from these products. Responses to the consultation will be accepted until September 27, 2013.
