One of Prosper de Mulder’s five animal rendering plants, John Knight (ABP) Ltd, has been fined a record £75k for failing to prevent or treat odours from its plant. The subsidiary of PDM has to pay the same again in costs, for what constitutes a breach of the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2010. Neighbours described the odours, which are caused when the facilities boilers are either used minimally or not at all, as “repugnant”. It is the largest fine for an odour-related offence and the largest obtained by a council for an environmental offence.
