On 18 January 2008, the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) approved easyJet plc’s acquisition of GB Airways despite initial concerns over high market shares in scheduled passenger flights on routes between London (Gatwick) airport and certain popular holiday destinations. However, the OFT concluded that entry barriers (such as slot allocation) on overlap routes could be overcome by competitors. Moreover, concerns were allayed with regard to future routes since GB Airways operated under a franchise agreement with British Airways, which has a veto over new routes.
