The Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan currently soaks up more carbon than it produces due to its extensive forests and low fossil fuel use, enabling it to declare its carbon negative status. However, with increasing industrial development, Yeshey Penjor, who led the country’s delegation at the preparatory UN Climate talks between 9-11 April, raised concerns that the country will need to turn to foreign investment in the country’s potential for hydro-power, to meet its growing energy needs without turning to an increased reliance on fossil fuels.
