In consideration of geopolitical cycle and global macroeconomic trends, applications for Patent Rights fell short of the mark in 2018. Based on the TURKPATENT data, a positive trend was observed in international applications in 2018.
Negative trend observed in applications of Intellectual Property Rights, including patent applications, root in the 2016-2018 period in which Turkey and the world have been going through. Trademarks mark the smoothest transition. However, official data shows that extreme volatile market trends in financial markets in August 2018 have led to destruction both in economic activities for the rest of the year and in the Intellectual Property Rights.
Therefore, in consideration of the potential of Turkish economy, 2018 statistics do not fully represent the full picture. With the recovery observed in 2019 and the base effects in 2018, we expect a positive trend in national economy and Intellectual Property Rights in Turkey
In order to make a high level analysis of the 2018 outlook, we must first understand and interpret indicators in the 2015-2017 period. Intellectual Property Rights, having a positive correlation with economic growth, stand as an important indicator on production of high value-added goods and services. Intellectual Property Rights, among all initiatives leading to a stronger and more sustainable national economy, have one of the highest multiplier effect. Being published in the Official Gazette is a major indication of this effect. Making the correlation between GDP country rankings and Intellectual Property Rights statistics, we can talk about statistically significant and valid relationship between the two time sequences.
