The Government is consulting on the right to request flexible working for all employees. Consultation ends on 8 August 2011. The Government aims to amend the legislation on flexible working as soon as possible. At present the right to request flexible working is limited to parents and carers. Although employees have the right to request a contract variation to enable them to work flexibly there is no right to demand this. Employers can still refuse such requests for specific business reasons. Consultation is also taking place under the Modern Workplaces theme on flexible parental leave, the operation of statutory annual leave and the conduct of a mandatory pay audit if there has been a breach of the equal pay legislation.
