As of 1 September 2011, the landfill levy has been substantially increased under the Waste Management (Landfill Levy) Regulations 2011 by the Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government in accordance with provision made under the Environment Miscellaneous Act 2011. The Waste Management (Landfill Levy) Regulations 2011 increased the levy from €30 to €50 per tonne of waste disposed at waste disposal facilities, and replaced and revised the Waste Management (Landfill Levy) Regulations 2008 which implemented section 73 (3) of the Waste Management Acts.
Minister for the Environment, Phil Hogan T.D., now has the power to increase that levy, by no more than €50 in the financial year and a maximum levy amount of €120 per tonne of waste is permitted overall.
In implementing a substantial increase in the levy, the government is seeking to divert waste from landfill in order to remain in line with EU standards which demand a move away from landfill to waste treatments higher up the waste hierarchy. It is intended that the levy will be increased to €65 per tonne from July 2012 and €75 per tonne from July 2013
