Judicial reviews of the Government’s plan to switch from the Retail Prices Index (RPI) to the Consumer Prices Index (CPI), as the preferred measure of inflation for up-rating public sector pension benefits, have been granted to various organisations representing public sector workers including the teachers’ unions NASUWT, and ATL the GMB union and various pensioner groups. The groups, which represent more than two million public sector workers, contend that the Government’s decision should be overturned. The High Court has decided that the judicial reviews will be heard together, with the hearing scheduled to start on 25 October 2011.
