The Department of Industry, Innovation, Climate Change, Science, Research and Tertiary Education (Department) is currently seeking submissions on a proposed methodology for calculating the international reference price for “carbon” from 1 July 2015. The Department is also currently seeking submissions on a proposed approach and assumptions that will underpin annual modelling of the Australian economy to develop projections of Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions - the results of which will be a key input into the Climate Change Authority’s recommendations (required by February 2014) on the level of greenhouse gas emissions caps for the carbon pricing mechanism, indicative national emissions trajectory and carbon budget. Today, 23 April 2013, the Climate Change Authority announced that it is seeking submissions on a proposed approach to the Caps and Targets Review. One of the key recommendations arising from this review will be the pollution caps - or more specifically the total number of carbon units to be issued (for free and at auction) for FY16, FY17, FY18, FY19 and FY20.
