Kraft’s proposed merger with French company Danone Biscuits has received clearance from the European Commission (Commission) provided that Kraft complies with certain commitments. The Commission’s investigation found that the proposed merger could hinder competition on the Spanish biscuit market, as the transaction would transform Kraft into the market leader in this market. The transaction would also have an impact on the Hungarian chocolate bars market. Kraft has therefore agreed to sell some of its Spanish biscuit brands including Artiach, Chiquilin, and Marbú Dorada. In Hungary, Kraft will divest itself of the Balaton brand. Market testing of these proposals by the Commission indicated that they would be sufficient to meet the competition concerns.
