The 2009 Revised Exchange Visitor Skills List was published by the Department of State (DOS) in the April 30, 2009 Federal Register. The skills list was last revised in 1997.

The skills list reflects the need, in various countries, for individuals who possess skills in particular areas. The list is an important tool for foreign students, U.S. universities, and prospective U.S. employers in determining whether a J-1 nonimmigrant, at the end of his or her stay in the United States, will be subject to a two-year home residency requirement. If a J-1 nonimmigrant is subject to a two-year foreign residence requirement, he or she must either satisfy the requirement or have it waived before returning to the United States in certain visa statuses.
