The Competition Commission (CC) has ordered BAA to sell Gatwick, Stansted and either Edinburgh or Glasgow airport. In its final report, the CC concluded that BAA’s ownership of seven UK airports restricts competition and has adverse effects for both passengers and airlines. The CC requires BAA to carry out the divestments in sequence, beginning with Gatwick, then Stansted, followed by one of the Scottish airports. The divestments should be completed within two years. The sale of Gatwick is already underway. In December, the CC provisionally recommended selling Edinburgh airport but has subsequently concluded that the case is not strong to favour one over the other. The CC will vet all purchasers to ensure they are independent of BAA and can compete with it effectively.
