On 14 June 2013, Insurance Ireland published an article on its website indicating that government proposals to impose a new public bed charge would lead to a considerable increase in health insurance premiums. The article also describes the impact of this anticipated increase, i.e. a significant reduction in the number of persons holding health insurance policies. This, it argues, could result in (a) substantial additional burden on the public health system and (b) reduction of the income stream for public hospitals generated from privately insured patients.
