On 10.10.07 the European Commission published a paper consulting seafarers and employers' representatives on whether EU laws adequately protect seagoing workers. The first-phase consultation asks whether the current exclusion of seafaring workers from certain social and labour laws should be eliminated, if there is a need for specific regulation for the seafaring profession and what is the best way to improve health and safety on board sea vessels. The consultation is a follow up to the 2006 Green Paper on the future of Maritime Policy and part of a new maritime package adopted on 10.10.07.

Reassessing the regulatory and social framework for more and better seafaring jobs in the EU.
