The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has approved the acquisition of eight local Berkshire newspaper titles by Dunfermline Press Limited (Dunfermline) from Trinity Mirror plc. Although the merger is one that in terms of size would normally be treated as one of minor importance, the OFT found that the merger would result in a substantial lessening of competition in Slough and Windsor. Consequently, Dunfermline offered divestment undertakings to sell the Slough and Windsor Express series to Baylis & Co (The Maidenhead Advertiser) Limited. The OFT cleared the merger on 7 May 2008 subject to these undertakings. It took only three months from the time the OFT raised its concerns over the merger for the divestment of assets to Baylis to be completed.
