Chinese Invention Patent Filing Statistics for 2012

As 2012 statistics show, the number of applications for invention patents received by SIPO totals 652,777, up 24.0% over 2011, with 535,313 from home and 117,464 from abroad at a growth rate of 28.7% and 6.2% respectively. In 2012, a total of 67,625 national phase applications under the PCT are recorded, accounting for 57.6% of the filings from abroad. Of the filings from home, 80.0% are service inventions amounting to 428,427 while 20.0% are non-service inventions to 106,886.

The top 10 filing provinces are predominantly from the east part of China: Jiangsu Province at 110,091 (up 30.0%); Guangdong Province at 60,448; Beijing at 52,720; Shandong Province at 40,381 (up 57.6%); Shanghai at 37,139; Zhejiang Province at 33,265; Liaoning Province at 19,740; Anhui Province at 19,391 (up 76.6%); Shanxi Province at 17,043 and Sichuan Province at 16,368 (see figure 1).

By 2012, the cumulative number of applications for invention patents filed with SIPO has added up to 3,502,683 in total, with 2,379,272 (67.9%) from home and 1,123,411 (32.1%) from abroad.

  1. Top 10 Domestic Filers for Invention Patents in 2012

In 2012, Huawei has bounced back to the first place topping the list with 4,231 filings, followed by ZTE at 3,446 and Sinopec at 3,334. Joining top 10 this year are Lenovo (Beijing), BOE Technology, Shenzhen China Star and Gree Electric (see figure 2).

  1. Top 10 Foreign Filers for Invention Patents in 2012

In 2012, foreign filers from the US, Japan, Europe and Korea have contributed to 93.0% of invention patent filings from abroad. Japan enjoys the record number of 42,278, up 7.8%, which accounts for 36.0% of total foreign filings. The US comes with 29,510, up 3.7%, taking up 25.1%. Europe occupies a smaller percentage of 24.2% with 28,466, up 5.0%. Korea is the fourth biggest filing nation with 8,985, up 10.5%, which amounts to 7.6% of the total (see figure 3).

Invention applications filed by foreign companies have totaled 111,945 in 2012. Panasonic overtakes Sony with 2,191 filings, the latter of which has filed 2,184 applications. Samsung is back on top 10 list at 1,754 as a bronze winner. (see figure 4).

The top 5 technical fields for filings from home in 2012 are motor, electrical equipment, electric power totaling 40,544, measurement 36,468, computer technology 28,192, mechanical engineering 27,814 and civil engineering 26,183. The top 5 technical fields for filings from abroad in 2012 are motor, electrical equipment, electric power totaling 12,119, computer science 8,111, transport 6,743, semiconductor 6,205 and digital communications 6,138.
