Despite the on-going commercial battle over US food giant, Kraft Food's bid to acquire Cadbury, the deal gained competition approval at the EU level on 5 January 2010. The European Commission's investigation did identify competition concerns as a result of high market shares for chocolate confectionery in Poland and Romania. However, Kraft agreed that it would divest Cadbury's business interests in those territories to meet those concerns. No significant market concerns arose in relation to the UK and Ireland. Whilst Cadbury has very high market shares in the UK and Ireland for chocolate confectionery, Kraft has made relatively little penetration into those markets.
