An agreement between the Government and the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (together with some of the major public sector trade unions, including SIPTU and IMPACT) to cut the public service pay bill by €1 billion was reached last week.

This three year agreement proposes significant changes in the public service, particularly around pay and working hours of certain public sector workers. It remains to be seen whether this will be approved by the relevant union members, and indeed whether the Government will take further steps towards the legal enforceability of the agreement, whether through primary or secondary legislation or through a Registered Employment Agreement.
