A report from the Treasury Select Committee says the Payments Council should not have the power to abolish cheques or take decisions on any instrument of payment that affects millions of people. It is concerned the members of the industry-led Payments Council will instead abolish cheques “by the back door”. It wants the Payments  Council to be brought within the scope of official legislative supervision, and to seek confirmation from banks that the Payments Council will have advance sight of any material the banks intend to send their customers about the availability of cheques. The report also recommends reintroduction of the cheque guarantee card. (Source: Select Committee Report on the Future of Cheques)
