The California Air Resources Board voted 9-1 yesterday to adopt a low carbon fuel standard. The rule aims to cut vehicle emissions 10 percent by 2020. It also promotes the use of low carbon fuels such as hydrogen and cellulosic ethanol, and expands the market for electric vehicles. Gov. Schwarzenegger issued a statement saying, “California's first-in-the-world Low Carbon Fuel Standard will not only reduce global warming pollution—it will reward innovation, expand consumer choice and encourage the private investment we need to transform our energy infrastructure."
