On 30 October 2007, mainland China and Macau SAR signed an agreement to recognize awards made under their respective arbitration laws as being mutually legal and enforceable (the Agreement). A similar agreement is already in place between China and Hong Kong. The vice president of the Supreme People’s Court stated that the Arrangement on Reciprocal Recognition and Enforcement of Arbitral Awards was another example of progress in the field of judicial co-operation between China and Macau.

The agreement will apply to all arbitral awards made after 20 December 1999, the date on which Macau was handed over from Portugal to China.
