The Government is consulting on a draft planning policy statement on sustainable economic development (PPS 4) as part of its national planning policy framework for economic development at regional, sub-regional and local levels for both urban and rural areas. The deadline for responses is 17 March 2008.

This is intended to assist planning authorities to positively plan for sustainable economic growth and respond to the challenges of the global economy in their planning policies and planning decisions. The draft statement has been developed in response to recommendations made in the Barker Review of Land Use Planning, a commitment made in the White Paper of May 2007 Planning for a sustainable future and the proposals set out in the review of sub-national economic development and regeneration in July 2007.
