The Intellectual Property Office has reported on the results of its consultation on the financial penalties for copyright infringement. The IPO proposed increasing the maximum fine in the magistrates’ court for copyright infringement from £5000 to £50,000. The majority of respondents to the consultation agreed with this proposal and in fact indicated a preference for magistrates to be able to impose this maximum fine in respect of all IP offences. The government will now consider legislative options for implementing this.
