Minister of Māori Affairs Pita Sharples has called a hui of iwi representatives and claimants to the Waitangi Tribunal on Māori custom and interests in freshwater.

While Dr Sharples acknowledged that each iwi has its own customs relating to freshwater, he stated that the hui is aimed at enhancing understanding across iwi so that Māori groups can be aligned in their dealings with the Crown and do not operate in conflict.

Dr Sharples will be conveying to the Prime Minister the key messages from the hui.  He hopes that leadership discussions will avoid the need for issues of Māori custom to be determined in the Courts.
