Further to our January Health Legal Update, the NHS Commissioning Board (NHS CB) has announced the addition to its consultation of seven new draft service specifications and a further clinical policy for specialised commissioning. The consultation period for these new additions started on 11 January and will run until 22 February 2013.
The service specifications and clinical commissioning policies define what the NHS CB expects to be in place for providers to offer evidence-based, safe and effective services. They have been developed by specialised clinicians, commissioners, expert patients and public health representatives to describe core and developmental service standards. Core standards are those that any reasonable provider of safe and effective services should be able to demonstrate. Developmental standards will stretch services over time to provide excellence in the field. Responses to the consultation are invited from clinical staff, public, patients and groups with an interest in these specialist areas, as well as from providers and commissioners.
There is a newly published draft clinical policy A4 Complex Endovascular Stent Grafts in Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm and the proposed service specifications are:
Area A – Internal medicine (digestion, renal, hepatobiliary and circulatory systems)
Area B – Cancer and blood (infection, cancer, immunity and haematology)
Area D – Trauma (traumatic injury, orthopaedics, head and neck, and rehabilitation)
There are two remaining draft service specifications which have yet to be published. It will then be available for consultation.
