According to a U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) report, total energy-related carbon dioxide emissions in the United States in 2012 were the lowest they have been since 1994, at 5.3 billion metric tons. The report also noted that since 2007, carbon dioxide emissions in the United States have fallen every year except in 2010. Contributing factors reportedly include increased use of natural gas for electricity generation, decreased transportation fuel demands and mild winter temperatures.
