The Department of Energy awarded over $175 million to assist construction of advanced fuel economy technologies for the future of cars and trucks. The awards were distributed by the Department of Energy’s advanced vehicles technology program. The funds will be dispersed over the next three to five years to support 40 projects. The total value of projects is $300 million, as participating companies have contributed. Projects include advanced fuels and lubricants to improve engine performance, new lightweight materials, new batteries for electric vehicles, advanced power electronics and electric motors, technology to convert engine heat to electricity, and improvements to fleet efficiency.
