Denmark’s former Deputy Prime Minister, Margrethe Vestager, won European Parliament support to act as the next European Commissioner for competition policy. In many respects, Vestager indicated that she intends to continue the legacy of her predecessor, Vice President Almunia, by committing to pursue the state aid modernisation agenda and taking forward on-going high-profile investigations. Nonetheless, Vestager stressed that she would not rush to close cases. Rather, she will ensure that sound decisions are made, based on a deep understanding of the markets as well as of the specific facts and issues at stake in each case.
