EPA has established a “most efficient” tier for appliances in its Energy Star® program. As described in a May 5, 2011, letter, the new tier calls for clothes washers, heating and cooling equipment, TVs, and refrigerator-freezers that demonstrate “truly exceptional” efficiency performance to be designated as “Most Efficient Energy Star Products.”

Qualified appliances must meet final recognition criteria set forth in the letter and must “demonstrate efficiency performance that is truly exceptional, inspirational, or leading edge.”

To be eligible for the new tier designation, appliance manufacturers must (i) be an Energy Star® partner in good standing, (ii) have the product performancecertified with an EPA-recognized certification body and (iii) confirm that the model(s) meet applicable recognition criteria. Once designated, the products will be highlighted on EPA’s Energy Star® Website.
