The United States and Immigration Services ("USCIS") has announced that employers are required to distribute a new Employment Eligibility Verification Form I-9 to all newly hired employees to verify their identity and authorization to work in the United States. The new form must also be administered for reverification of employees and for rehires. This impacts every employer in America. The noteworthy changes and additions in the new form are: (1) the increase in page length – from one to two pages; (2) expanded instructions; and (3) additional fields for a phone number, email address and foreign passport in Section 1. The new form was published on March 8, 2013, and employers must use this required form by May 7, 2013. With the increase in Immigration Customs Enforcement conducting Form I-9 audits and assessing millions in penalties for not complying, it is important for employers to visit the USCIS Web site at, download this form and start administering it to new hires.
