On August 12, 2009, Alejandro Mayorkas was sworn in as USCIS Director. Mayorkas was nominated by President Obama in April and confirmed by the Senate on August 7. As Director, Mayorkas will be in charge of the USCIS, an agency of 18,000 employees under the jurisdiction of the Department of Homeland Security, which adjudicates immigration-related applications and petitions.
