European Union leaders met May 22 to begin to map out a long-term energy strategy for the continent. This meeting comes after the European Parliament voted on May 21 to approve a non-binding resolution calling for the EU to adopt new renewable energy targets for 2030 and to reject an amendment calling for those targets to be between 40 and 45 percent of total energy production. It also follows a letter sent by CEOs of eight of the EU’s largest energy companies calling for dramatic energy policy action.
