• The United Steelworkers application to represent 2,000 fleet service workers at Regional Elite Airline Services was dismissed by the National Mediation Board (NMB). The NMB found that because the employees are cross-utilized, the proper classification is actually a combination of 3,800 fleet and passenger service employees. The union’s application was dismissed because they failed to submit a sufficient number of authorization cards.
  • A Gallup poll revealed that 52 percent of the respondents approved of unions, which is unchanged from last year. The poll also found that 55 percent of the respondents believe unions will become weaker in the future, up from 46 percent last year. According to the poll, Americans’ view of labor unions in the last three years have reached “historically low approval ratings” and record highs in expecting and wanting unions to be weaker.
  • The Secretary-Treasurer of the AFL-CIO, Elizabeth Schuler, spoke at the Young Workers Summit conference on September 29th. Focusing on the nation’s young union workers, she urged them to mobilize and organize unions. Schuler stated that the country needs a fresh generation of activists to deal with the world’s social and economic problems. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis also addressed the conference, asking young union workers to help President Obama pass his proposed American Jobs Act.
