The Medical Board of Australia (“Board”) has established an Expert Advisory Group to provide expert recommendations on the development of a ‘revalidation’ model. ‘Revalidation’ is the process by which medical practitioners are supported to keep their professional skills and knowledge up-to-date and remain fit to practice.

In its August 2016 interim report, the Expert Advisory Group proposed a ‘two by two’ approach to revalidation: strengthening continuing professional development and working to identify, assess and remediate at-risk and underperforming doctors. Under the proposed model, underperforming doctors could be required to participate in peer reviews of medical records and performance, as well as facilitated feedback sessions.

The Expert Advisory Group is expected to deliver its final recommendations to the Board in mid-2017.
