The Commission and the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) have published a report on alliances in the transatlantic air services market, completing a joint research project (launched in March 2008) aimed at furthering understanding of airline alliances and the different regulatory approaches applied by each agency to address competition issues.
The report states that the competitive structures of the airline sectors in each jurisdiction have a high degree of similarity. Legal regimes aside, the report finds scope for the Commission and DOT to work towards a compatible regulatory framework in order to achieve pro-competitive outcomes for consumers. The Commission has indicated that the project undertaken by the Commission and the DOT in researching and producing the report marks a step forward in regulatory cooperation between the Commission and the DOT.
