Unwanted pregnancies, scarring and incorrect fitting were amongst the complaints received by medical regulators from women fitted with the contraceptive implant Implanon. It is estimated that around 3,000 women were affected by failings of the implant, with almost 600 of those having unwanted pregnancies. NHS trusts have already offered settlements totalling nearly £200k for seven of the more serious cases, but this figure could rise. Equally, it remains to be seen whether or not the manufacturers, MSD, could face civil action.
