EPA has published a proposed rule that would set nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions standards for aircraft gas turbine engines. 76 Fed. Reg. 45,012 (7/27/11). The standards, which would make U.S. law consistent with international regulations, would reduce U.S. NOx emissions during takeoffs and landings by 100,000 tons between 2014 and 2030, according to EPA. The agency participated in the United Nation’s International Civil Aviation Organization proceedings during which most of the proposed standards were developed. EPA requests comments by September 26, 2011.
