Economic Development Minister Steven Joyce and Commerce Minister Craig Foss have formally launched the New Zealand Business Number (NZBN), which is designed to make it easier for businesses to work with government agencies. It is proposed that a single identifying number is assigned to all businesses, government agencies and commercial entities in New Zealand.

NZBNs were initially allocated to companies in December last year; and the Government is now engaging in a consultation on options for extending coverage to other businesses, including sole traders.

Feedback on the consultation can be provided online at or sent to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment. The consultation closes on11 April 2014.
