Last year, the Birmingham City Council adopted a Minimum Wage Ordinance that was to take effect July 1, 2016.  During the last special session of the Alabama Legislature, a proposed bill would have prevented Birmingham's Ordinance from taking effect.  On Tuesday, February 9, the Birmingham City Council revised the Ordinance, moving the effective date from July 1 to MARCH 1, 2016.  If you have employees in Birmingham, the minimum wage of $8.50 will take effect on March 1.  For details of the Ordinance, including the impact on tipped employees, those who perform a minimum of 20 hours of work in a calendar year within the city limits, and the severe penalties that may be imposed for violations, see my prior blog post.
