The Government has published a White Paper entitled “Framework for a Fairer Future – The Equality Bill”. It provides details about the thinking behind the Equality Bill to be introduced in the next Parliamentary session which aims to consolidate the current discrimination legislation into one Act.

The Equality Bill will:

  • Place a new Equality Duty on public bodies, bringing the three existing duties (in respect of race, disability and gender) together and extending them to cover gender reassignment, age, sexual orientation and religion or belief.
  • Ban secrecy clauses which prevent people form discussing their own pay.
  • Extend positive action so that employers can take into account under-representation of disadvantaged groups.
  • Allow Tribunals to make wider recommendations in discrimination claims, so that recommendations can apply to the whole workforce and not just the successful claimant.
