Increased analysis of the role of compressed natural gas (CNG) service vehicles is evident throughout the state. School districts are positioned to take advantage of the move to CNG vehicle fleets, especially in light of the growing CNG infrastructure throughout the state. The first step is inventorying your present situation and development of a strategic plan for your district to implement a CNG fleet over a 1-5 year period, depending upon your geographic area. Keys to this process are a cost-benefit analysis as well as funding/ financing options to maximize the opportunity for your district. While several studies concluded the initial cost of conversion to CNG did not outstretch the savings in terms of fuel costs, training for mechanics, or parts, pending legislation unanimously passed by the Ohio House of Representatives in March, 2014, (Am. H.B. 336), may be able to provide the necessary financial incentives to make the move to CNG more viable.
